Açaí berry (Acai, Açãí)
Acai berry is one of (and most important form marketing point of wiev) ingredient of MonaVie juice.
This berry contains vitamins, essential fatty acids (Omega3, Omega6), amino acids, enzymes, and so called phytonutrients cells. It has high ORAC value, meaning that is rich in atioxidants.
Acai berrry grows on palms, the palm is tall (15–30 meters), grows in South America (Brazil, Guyana, Suriname). People do eat fruits and the "heart of palm" - cluster of new leaves. Berries are round, small, deep dark purple, in groups of 3-8 per bunch. They look like grapes, but has less pulp and one big seed. Berries are used to make drinks, as colorant, and to eat them with ice cream.
What phytonutrients are
Phytonutrients are active substances in vegetables, fruits, grains, legumes (most concentrated near the outer border of fruit). They are said to be antioxidants, hamper the development of cancer cells, are antifungal, lower cholsesterol etc.
Amount of acai in MonaVie
This is unknown. The comapny does not want to publish the data about amount of acai in MonaVie. Moreover, in monavie juice drink is just juice, not the whole fruit, and the health benfits of whole fruit nad juice may differ.
Why is acai berry the most important fruit in MonaVie?
From marketing point of view, it is most importna because it is exotic, and not common in US.
From healt point of veiw, it's importance is due to high ontioxidant capability, many vitamins, fatty acids.
Other Açãí juices
There are other Acaí juices on the market, many of them far cheaper than Monavie, for example
Bossa Nova Superfruit Acai Juice, Sambazon Acai Antioxidant Superfood, Bom Dia Acai Berry Pomegranate etc.
Enviromental responsiblilty
It is better to harvest berry, than chop down an entire tree to get a small, 30 cm long section - the palmito "heart of the palm"
Portion of the profits help preserve the Amazon rainforest (?)
As can be see on a movie, berry is harvested by poor local cheap work force :)
On the other hand, the MORE project, MonaVie's charity organization, helps poor families in Brazil.
